Citronella has been used for centuries in various countries, including China, Sri Lanka, and, of course, Indonesia. Belonging to the Poaceae or Gramineae family, Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus jowwit) primarily hails from Java and Sumatra. In Indonesia, citronella oil is widely known as "Java Citronella Oil," obtained through the distillation of its leaves.

Citronella and its processed products have significantly contributed to the country, especially benefiting Indonesian farmers. Aside from being used to produce essential oils, citronella serves as a raw material for the creation of bio-additives for fuel oil. It can also be utilized in conserving critical lands such as those that are prone to erosion and reclamation.

Citronella oil contains chemical compounds like citral, geranial, neral, myrcene, limonene, and citronellal, imparting a warm, fresh, and slightly tangy aroma reminiscent of lemon. Such fragrance is commonly used in making soap, shampoo, perfume, and other products. Additionally, citronella oil is widely used in households for air purification and is renowned for its ability to repel insects.

Beyond its everyday function as an essential oils, citronella has other uses. It is frequently incorporated into various traditional ceremonies and rituals in Indonesia. For instance, citronella leaves are used to make garlands for wedding ceremonies, religious rituals, and other traditional events.
